The College – A Portrayal

Government Polytechnic College for Women (GPCW) functions under the authority of Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Tamil Nadu and affiliated to AICTE.

Established in the year 1964 with just 40 students in two courses viz. Diploma in Civil Engineering and National Diploma in Commercial Practice, this college now in its 50th year of existence, stands tall as a prestigious institution with 7 branches of study with over 1200 students.

Located in the heart of the city in a sprawling 10 acre campus amidst green environ, our college is a big attraction to women from both urban and rural areas. Catering to the needs of women, especially the downtrodden, it quenches their thirst for technical and commercial skills and know-how.

In its giant strides during its history of five decades, it has grown in leaps and bounds taking along the society, especially the women, empowering them technically, making them economically independent to be viable and equal partners to men both in family and profession. Through devoted service the institution not only provides students with opportunities to develop skills but also develop the right attitudes to function successfully in the ever competing world.

By the concerted efforts of the past and present faculty, the institution today stands as a pioneering and prestigious institution echoing the voice of women in the Kongu region.

Library

Library
 A Library has been functioning in the premises of college for the benefit of students, teaching and other staff. Books on Engineering and Non Engineering subjects, Tamil and English Dailies, Magazines on Technology and General Knowledge are available in the library. The library is spacious enough with good ventilation and l;ight facilities. About 16,000 books, 5 Dailies and more than 20 magazines are provided to the students. Apart from the books nearly 200 Cd’s are available in the library for the benefit of students.

Library Rules:
 1. The library functions on all working days.
 2. Students can enter the library after putting their signature in the gate register
3. Students must keep silence inside the library.
4. Each student can eligible for two library cards. They can take two books for reference. Maximum time limit for books is 15 working days. The books should be returned on the due date or before that. Failing of which a penalty fee of 0.50 paise will be collected per day.
5. if the students need to keep the books beyond the due date, they renewal the book and keep another 15 days. Only two renewal permissible for each book.
 6. Students should compulsorily return the books taken on the last working day of each semester.
 7. Before taking the book to outside, students should check whether the book is in good condition and all the pages are intact. Any defects found therein, it should be taken to the notice of the librarian. If any error found at the time of returning, the student is responsible for the damage occurred in.
8. The students should not write anything on the pages and kept the books in safe manner.
9. If the students lost their library cards, the fact should be informed to the librarian immediately.
10. If they need fresh card, they should apply for the duplicate card.
11. Cd’s are also issued for circulation and the time limit is only for 3 working days.
12. Magazines and Journals not issued for circulation only for reference.
 13. Internet Service and Xerox service available in the library for the benefit of students and staff.
                                                                 BOOK BANK
 A separate Book bank for the benefit of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students is available in the library. All the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students are eligible to receive the books under this scheme. These books are issued additionally apart from the books eligible for library cards. The books are issued without time limit and they can keep up to the end of the semester without fine. More than 2000 books are available in this scheme.
